Selfish Gene Cafe

I have recently found the most relaxing way to blog. Nope it's not lying on the bed but instead, sitting on my massage chair, playing music via the speakers on it and doing a nice 15 mins massage. I nvr know why I nvr thought of doing this but I'm definitely gona be sitting on my massage chair a lot more often now hahaha.

As most of you know, my birthday was last Sunday. Huge thanks to everyone who celebrated my birthday with me, especially my lovely class who planned a mini surprise party for me on Monday! Being a brunch foodie, I suggested going for brunch on my birthday itself with my family. However brunch can be a little pricey when you're going with your family. I mean there's 6 of us and it can easily amount to a little too much for brunch. After all, you basically just have eggs and toast during brunch. Keeping this in mind, I started doing a little research for brunch places that aren't too pricey. Preferably under $20 for each person. I went to ladyironchef.com and checked out his recommendations for Singapore's inexpensive restaurants when I found out about Selfish Gene Cafe.

Did a little math and it should cost about $20 approx per person so I decided to go there. Location wise, it's at Chinatown area. A little inconvenient to get to if you're not driving cause it's kind of in an alley. 1 thing I love about going out with my family, they can drive so I get to go to places I don't normally go to hehe.

It's a pretty average sized cafe. Can get a little crowded during lunch hour. Luckily for us, we got there at around 2pm. Just missed the brunch crowd and was ahead of the tea crowd. At around 2.30pm, we saw people queuing for seats alr. We originally planned to go a little earlier but we all kind of overslept and everyone was taking so long to get ready!!! I was done in probably about 15 mins but the rest took an hour. I guess it's a good thing that they took so long if not we would have been queuing for a seat. Okay anw, I found the place pretty echo-ish. It isn't the kind of peaceful, quiet cafe. You could definitely hear people talking, quite loud actually. I assume it's cause of the walls. You know... echo. With that being said, it's not as if it's unbearable. It just isn't the quiet cafe.

One thing good about SGC is that it has no service charge!!! I believe we can all agree that service charge can be such a rip off sometimes. Customers have to go up to the counter to order and you'll be given a number plate. A waiter/waitress will then serve your food to your table. I wish more places were like that.

While looking at the menu, I must say that there isn't a huge variety of food available. In fact, only 1 dish appealed to all of us. It was the Breakfast Plate which almost all of us ordered. I guess it's because it contains everything you want during brunch. Rifdi couldn't order it though because there was pork in it so he got something else.

Breakfast Plate ($15.80)

And here it is! It consisted of toast, ham, sauteed mushrooms, scrambled eggs, tomatoes and a sausage. I thought it was pretty decent for its price. A few days prior to my birthday, I went to Kith Cafe and ordered smth similar as well. If I had to compare the 2, I would say that the scrambled eggs at SGC was better because it was served warm whereas the sauteed mushrooms at Kith Cafe tasted better. I guess on average I don't really have any preference between the 2. The toast was done pretty well and I actually took my brother's toast hehehe. Privilege of being the birthday girl. Well he actually doesn't want it but I'd like to think that he was being nice :D

BOB ($15.80)

Here is what Rifdi ordered. I'm not sure why it's called BOB but it basically contains a toast, salmon and poached eggs. Personally, I've nvr had poached eggs before. Please don't judge! I just love scrambled eggs so I always order them. Well I tried poached eggs for the first time and mmmm let's just say it's not really my cup of tea. I don't like eating the yolk actually. I only like it when it's fully cooked and not all watery. I was asking Rifdi how it was and he said the poached eggs was quite good actually. I had a bite of the toast as well and I must say the toast was AWESOME. I kept asking for more toast cause it was really good. If you're a poached eggs and toast lover, BOB is the set for you.

Cafe Latte ($4.80)

Time to talk about the drinks! Here is what my parents ordered. I'm not an expert on latte so I can't really tell what makes a good latte. I just really like it cause of the flower design on top of it. Doesn't it look pretty?! Simple but makes a statement.

Hot Chocolate with Cream ($5.80)

There's just smth about hot chocolate that goes well with brunch. I didn't have to think about what drink I wanted. Apparently, my bother as well since he managed to scream "I want hot chocolate" faster than me hehe. I actually did enjoy this cup of hot chocolate. It wasn't too sweet as most of them are. I had an iced chocolate at Food For Thought awhile back and towards the end, it was sooooo sweet! It was almost impossible to finish it because it was way too sweet. However, the one at SGC was done just nice(:

Ice Matcha Latte

Here's what my sister got. Can't rmb the price of it unfortunately but it should be around $4.50-$5.50 just like the other drinks. I had a sip and it taste pretty much like your ordinary Matcha Latte.

Chocolate Cake

We decided to get dessert at SGC cause we were all too lazy to walk. Rifdi originally told us of a pretty good place for desserts at Chinatown area but we were pigs and decided to stay there. Here's what my brother got. I thought it tasted average but my brother really liked it. Guess you have to love sponge cakes!

Banana Cake

I have a thing for bananas lately. Banana pancakes, waffles and now... cake. This is a mini load of banana cake served warm with caramel, banana, crumble and peanut butter sauce. I really loved this cake. Thumbs up!! When I say warm, I mean really, really warm. What I love about cakes hehe. It tasted really good because it was served warm. Not only did it have bananas on top of it but it had slices of bananas in the cake as well. Definitely a must try and 1 of my favourite dish from SGC.

Well here are some more photos we took at SGC!

M1 For Every One

Hey guys! I'm really super, uber, duper excited to share with you all a contest that is being held by M1! You can stand to win attractive prizes such as a Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Samsung GS4! You don't have to be a tech savy person to want one of those. I know I always find myself checking out these gadgets when I'm out.

I'm sure all of you guys know what M1 is. M1 has always been making sure that each of their customer receives the best service. Personally, I'm not an M1 user but I always see them coming up with new plans and promotions to try to meet our needs. Kudos to them! This year, they are even going an extra mile to listen to what each and every one of their customers want, and giving them exactly what they need. No matter how old you are, M1 was something meant for you. Thus, M1 For Every One! (:

You know the frustration you feel when your 3G loses connection? It happens soooooo often!!! Most of the time, in a tunnel or a lift. However, sometimes it can just suddenly lose connection suddenly and causes me to not be able to access the web. To be honest, it really bugs me a lot. You know how items from blog shops such as TTR, Love Bonito and Missypixie gets sold out really fast? Most of the time during their launch, I'm out so I can only use my phone to cart out the items. I'm not sure if I'm just unlucky but my 3G tends to not work during these crucial moments!! I always get a panic attack and find myself getting really jittery. Well finally there's a solution to that. 4G ftw!

Time to talk about the competition! It's really simple actually and you basically have to made a short video of yourself saying what you enjoy about 4G. It will only take less than 15 mins to film the video using a camera phone or even a web cam and you could be one of the lucky winners walking away with prizes such as a HTC One! Sounds enticing doesn't it hehehe. Below is a video which I've done to give you guys an idea of how it goes.

To break it down, here's a step by step guide on how you can go about creating your video.

Step 1: Find a large sheet of paper or whiteboard

Step 2: Write down what you love about 4G.

Step 3: Get someone to pass you your paper/whiteboard from your right

Step 4: Read out what you've written

Step 5: Pass it to your left

Step 6: Upload the video to M1's Facebook page

And TADAH! You're done! It's really as simple as ABC and you can do it during your free time.

Now some of you may wonder what's the point of this contest. Well M1 is positioning themselves as a telco that listens to its consumers' needs, and the Facebook contest is a platform for consumers(even if you're not a M1 use it's ok!) to tell M1 what they want. Now you can tell M1 what you want and what you hope can be improved!!! I'm so glad that there are companies out there that care about consumer's needs. On a side note, this is actually what I'm learning in Econs now hahaha. Ok back to the topic, it's really meaningful and now your voices can be heard(:

I can think of a few reasons why 4G is AWESOME. Well for starters, guess who's gona be 1 of the first to get her hands on the latest items from blog shops! Moreover, during break times in school, I can spend every minute watching Whose Line Is It Anyway and Ellen vids with my classmates without having to spend half the time streaming it. Oh! Not to mention the ability to be able to catch up on the latest tweets and insta photos!

My Fair Lady

I AM OFFICIALLY 17! Well it doesn't really make a difference but yay! Now I'm the same age as most of my friends.

I wore this dress out for brunch with my family today. I originally wanted to save this dress for Phantom of the Opera but it didn't seem so serious ish. Like you know, to fit the atmosphere of it all. Thinking of going black that day. This dress is more of a girly girl kind of dress so I wore it for my 17th birthday!

Soooooo do I look like I'm 17? Hahaha ok back to the dress. What I absolutely love was the material. The material was so comfy and definitely worth the price. It actually looks expensive to me(yay!) I was contemplating between getting this dress in Indigo and this colour but decided to go with Jade in the end because it was more me. Indigo is more of a rocker chic kind of colour.

I would have preferred if the sleeves were a little lower so that it doesn't 'cut off' my shoulder. Nevertheless, superb quality for an online blogshop. Aforarcade just earned itself a new fan!

Overall, I was going for a really sweet, girly kind of look, the kind of outfit which you would wear for a tea party(: I think I definitely achieved that. I felt soooo girly the whole day! With my pair of white heels and head band, I don't see how much girlier this outfit could get. I've talked about this pair of heels in my previous post before so I shan't repeat myself again. You can read about my pair of heels here!

Going to post about my birthday brunch at Selfish Gene Cafe soon!

PS. For my birthday wish this year, I wish to be able to travel to somewhere new each year starting with Shanghai this year!

Swing in the Park

I'm a happy girl cause I finally found a chance to wear my Missypixie floral X back skater dress out! I bought this dress a month ago and it has been hanging in my wardrobe ever since. It's not that I don't want to wear this dress out but it's because I have a horrible tank top tan line(which I still sadly have) and it looks pretty bad. Well I decided to not care about my horrible tan line and wear this dress out anw.

What I LOVE about this dress is the cutting! It has a slimming effect on the waist so yay! Who doesn't like a dress that has a flattering cut right? Just look at the close up photo of the dress! Moreover, the prints are really lovely. Every girl needs a floral dress. In fact, I have quite a lot of floral items which can get a little boring after a while. However, I couldn't pass on this dress because it's really unique. It features an X back which gives your normal floral dress a little surprise.

As for my accessories, I wanted to go brown today. Opened up my accessory drawer and grabbed the first chunk of bangles I saw. Wore my worn to death brown flats and I'm done!

Recently, I love wearing open back dresses but I still can't bring myself to wear em too often cause of my tan line ): This is so depressing. I think it'll take probably 6 months for the tan to go away. When I wear dresses like these, I have to let my hair down so that my tan line won't be so obvious.

Kith Cafe

What do I like about my birthday? I get to give myself an excuse to meet up with some of my good friends and have good food. Not that I don't do that on a regular basis but now I get to do it and not feel guilty :D

In secondary school, I had a group of really close friends consisting of Shericia, Lynn, Vanessa Ho and I <3 I've known Shericia for 9 years, Lynn for 7 years and Vho for 5 years. Well technically I knew Vho since P3 but we nvr really talked then so it doesn't count. For those of you who know us, did you know that Shericia, Vho and I were coincidentally in the same CCA in P3?! Btw, Shericia only found out yesterday that Vho was in tap dance too hahaha.

So we were planning on meeting up to celebrate my birthday and to catch up as well! It's always nice to catch up with your old friends and find out how they're doing. I originally wanted to go to Dempsey Hill but it was a little inconvenient to get to. After doing a little research online, I found out about Kith Cafe which was conveniently located at Park Mall(near Plaza Sing). I thought it would be a nice place to go to since Fort Canning was nearby and I could snap a few photos for an ootd post(Coming up real soon!).

I've read a few reviews online and they were generally good. The only problem was that the cafe have very little seats indoors. Hence there is a very high chance that we would have to be seated outdoors. I told the girls that just so they would be properly dressed :D

Shericia and Vho actually arrived 30 mins earlier(I have weird friends) and I jokingly told Sher to queue first but she said that the queue wasn't long so instead, they went round shopping. When I arrived, we all walked to Kith Cafe and realised that we made the stupidest mistake ever. There wasn't a long queue because there was a waiting list. You had to write down your name and contact number and the staff would call you when there's a seat. Unluckily for us, there was about 11 people before us. So for those of you who are planning to go to Kith Cafe, rmb to write your name down on the waiting list!

We decided to just wait around the area instead of gng somewhere else to eat. We thought that the time would past by really quick if we just keep talking. Turns out, time did past by fast and before we knew it, it was our turn! Like I mentioned earlier, there weren't many seats indoors so we were seated outdoors. When we first saw the menu, we were spoilt for choices! None of us knew what we wanted to order and we were super indecisive. Well in the end, after about 10 mins of ''Should I get the sandwich? No wait, maybe I should get a breakfast set. Or maybe dessert?", we finally knew what we wanted to get.

Big Breakfast ($16.50)

Being the brunch lovie that I am, I knew I wanted to get brunch. The only problem was I didn't know if I should get a toast or a set. I decided to order the Big Breakfast in the end because of some good reviews I've read but mostly because it basically contains everything. From toast to bacon to eggs to mushrooms :D Saves you the trouble of having to choose what kind of food you want. The mushrooms was cooked really well and it does have an interesting taste to it. For the eggs, I would have preferred it a little warmer. It was pretty cold when I ate it. As for the toast, it was quite well done. This set actually comes with 4 slices so that's quite a lot of bread. Nevertheless, I did manage to finish eating it hehehe.

Smoked Duck Breast Sandwich ($12)

This was what Sher ordered. Her reaction was hilarious when I asked her about the dish. I basically said "So what do you think about the dish?" and she replied "the duck is good". I asked her to describe more and she told me "like not ordinary duck lorh." HAHAHA OMG TYPICAL SHER. Vho and I laughed at her for sooooo long. (If you're reading this, I know you want to kill me but too bad) Okay but jokes aside, I tried the duck and it was really good! It wasn't too salty, just enough for you to taste it. The chips were pretty much your ordinary nacho chips.

Toasties Bacon Scrambled Eggs Cheddar ($6.50)

Last but not least, the dish that Vho ordered. This was actually what I originally wanted to order. It's pretty good actually. However, the portion is pretty small. It's more of a early breakfast or tea time kind of meal. Not very filling but it was good(:

Caramel Cookie Milkshake
Chocolate Orange Milkshake

If you're gng to Kith Cafe, the milkshake is definitely a must try. Their milkshake brings all the boys to their yard. HAHA sorry, I just had to. For the Chocolate Orange Milkshake, the taste of chocolate and orange are super distinct. With every sip, you could definitely taste both ingredients infused tgt. Not exaggerating. Just a fun note but we were actually laughing at Vho cause the milkshake cost more than her toast but oh well, anything for a good milkshake I say!

Overall, the experience I've had at Kith Cafe is pretty pleasant. On the day I went, it was drizzling. Thus, it was more cooling(lucky for us!) It could get a little hot in the afternoon so do take note of the weather before going.

Here are some more pics of the lovely birthday brunch I've had with em (:

On a side note, just want to say how grateful I am for having the most amazing friends in my life. Vho and Sher have been celebrating every birthday with me since Sec 1. That's 5 years consecutively and counting! Unfortunately, Lynn couldn't join us that day cause she's in Malaysia! Stop gng to Malaysia on my birthday Lynn!!! Haha but I love Lynn too and she's the cutest(and blurest) friend I'll ever have. We might be in different schools now but I look forward to seeing you guys after my promos!

Love,
Angie

Boho

Casual, comfy wear for a brunch date with Jolene(: Now this is an outfit that I wouldn't see myself wearing in the past cause of a few reasons. Firstly, I nvr was a big fan of shorts. Quite weird for someone living in Singapore but I always preferred skirts and dresses. Secondly, I seldom carry a clutch because I normally bring my DSLR out and it's just pretty inconvenient. Well it's always nice to try out something new once in awhile so tadah!

I wasn't gng for any particular kind of look but basically wanted to be as comfy as possible and preferably dressed for the heat. I found the perfect top in my wardrobe which my sister got about a week back. It had such a 'totally meant for a hot weather' vibe and was screaming wear me wear me. Moreover, it looked so comfy and laid back. Just what I was looking for! Grabbed a pair of denim shorts and I was good to go(:

I wanted to add a pop of colour to this outfit to make it look more unique. I've always wanted to use this clutch but nvr had the opportunity to because I always bring my DSLR around(need a bigger bag). Since I wasn't bringing my camera out that day, I grabbed the chance and finally brought this neon pink clutch out to play. Woohoo!

And of course, I need my armswag. In order to add that little finishing touch on a summer look, my pair of bangles were perfect! It had such a beach look to it. Wore my favourite sandals ever and my outfit is complete :D

Eggs & Berries

The National Day holidays are finally here!!! Everyone in school have been counting down the days to this break ever since Youth Day. Want to know what's better? My birthday is in 4 days! In order to kick start this awesome break, Jolene and I had brunch after our half-school day today(:

I was searching on google for nice brunch places but most of them are really inconvenient to get to without a car(I need to drive so badly) when I remembered seeing a brunch place at Changi Point! Normally Jo and I wouldn't mind traveling for good food but we went out for supper at Chomp Chomp yesterday and didn't really get much sleep. We were pretty much walking zombies in school today so we wanted to go somewhere in the east area where it's convenient for us.

I've been to Changi Point several times and this little eatery never fails to catch my attention. The decoration is really simple but princess-ish at the same time. It's kind of like a tea party setting. The tables were white and the chairs were pink! There were quite a lot of seats too and they had al fresco dining as well but of course, we all would prefer to be seated indoors cause Singapore's weather is wayyyy too hot.

In school today, Jo and I were pretty excited and even googled for their menu. I was blown away by the choices. They had a whole list of pancakes, crepes and waffles! 3 of my most favourite food ever all in 1 place. Jo was very certain she'd get waffles so I thought I should either get the crepes or pancakes so we could try a wider variety of food that they had. For today, I was craving for berries such as strawberries and blueberries. I have no idea why cause I'm usually more of a chocolate kind of person. My brother actually thought I would order Devil's Chocolate(Crepes) but we all have random cravings once in awhile.

It didn't take me a long time to choose what I wanted to try because of the pictures provided! When I saw the photo of Berries Bananas Pancakes, I knew I wanted to get it. It just looked to good to give it a miss. Moreover, craving for berries satisfied!

The menu did state that it would come with 3 different syrups so I assumed that they would pour it over the pancakes then serve it. That's pretty much what I experience at most of the other cafes that sells pancakes. However, the syrups were served separately and you get to pour them yourself! That was my favourite part of the whole dining experience. You get to choose what sauce you want and the amount of sauce to pour. This is pretty thoughtful cause different people have different preferences. Personally, I like it sweet but for someone like Jo, she doesn't like it with a lot of syrup. Furthermore, you know how annoying it gets when they pour syrup over your pancakes but leave the in between slices syrup-less? This solves the problem :D

Being the greedy person that I am, I just had to try all the syrups! I had 4 slices of pancakes so I used 1 type of syrup for each and did a mash up for the last slice. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that it's totally a picture perfect moment? Jo was happily snapping photos of me pouring syrup all over my pancakes.

(Before the explosion of syrup poured on it)

(Yeah, I poured wayyyyy too much sauce but oh well :P )
Berries Banana Pancake ($14.50)

When the dish first arrived, I was super shocked at the amount of fruits there were on it. Just look at it! Jo and I were saying that they are really generous with their fruits. Normally at other places, they don't really give a lot of toppings. Best way to eat it? Eat a slice of banana, strawberry, blueberry, whip cream and pancakes all in one bite hohoho. Oh right! Usually I'm not a fan of whip cream(no particular reason why but I just don't like it) but I actually really loved the whip cream that they served! It had a strawberry taste to it which goes really well with the pancakes. Never actually thought of eating pancakes with whip cream before... The pancakes were soft and fluffy just the way I like :D The portion is just right for 1 person and I managed to finished everything. Definitely worth the price.

Over the Rainbow Waffle ($14.80)
B&J Strawberry Ice Cream ($4.20)

Jo decided to get this because she saw the photo on the menu and it looked sooooo good! Moreover, she couldn't decide what toppings she wanted so she ordered this because it had a wide variety of fruits. Just look at the photo! I can't even tell what some of the toppings are. I'm sure there were kiwis, different type of nuts, strawberry and I think there were peaches too. Once again, we were impressed by the amount of fruits. You could add B&J's ice cream if you wanted to for most of the dishes(including mine). Remember a few weeks back when I blogged about Wimbly Lu? The waffle at Wimbly Lu is definitely nicer. This one wasn't as crispy as we would have preferred it.

It's been awhile since Jo and I went for good food together after a school day. Had so much fun with her today and looking forward to after promos where we can do things like this every single day! Not forgetting the boys as well. Planning an Adventure Cove trip maybe during Sept hols to celebrate my belated birthday.(Annoying John and Cornelius are forever not free).
